CD/DVD to DMG with Disk Utility

Disk Utility is a great application for working with hard disks, but also with CDs, DVDs and disk images. If we want to create an image of a CD or a DVD in DMG format, we can make it easily with this tool. These are the steps I followed to archieve it:

  1. Insert the CD/DVD into your Mac and open Disk Utility.
  2. When you see the CD/DVD in the left side of the application, select it and click on New Image.
  3. Make sure that the image format is Compressed, and the encryption is None (or something similar).
  4. Select the folder and the name of the file and click Save.

And that’s all! Easy, fast, and without any external tool.

Slow Snow Leopard

First time I ran Snow Leopard, I noticed it was a little slower than Leopard, specially when using Exposé. Due to I spent my money supposing to get a faster and better operating system, I started looking on the internet for an answer to this. The solution was easier to find than I thought because it was on Apple Support discussions. The only thing I had to do is to delete the following file:
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.audio.coreaudiod.plist
It works for me. Now the system runs faster and smoother. I remind you that you do all this at your own risk. I recommend you to make a backup of this file if something goes wrong. To restore it simply copy the backup in the same path.

Update: The only thing I have lost is the system sounds. In the next post I will tell you how bring them back.

Google Chrome (Mac): Error 12

During the last few weeks, Google Chrome can't be update, giving the following error:
Update server not available (error: 12)
I managed to solve it, so now I have the latest version and the update system works without giving any error. There may be a simpler solution, but that's how I got it solved, without losing any extensions or thumbnails of the New Tab page:
  1. Uninstall Google Chrome. I did this step with the AppCleaner free tool, so if you uninstall it in another way I'm not sure if all this will work. Anyway I definitely recommend AppCleaner for your daily life as it cleans very well all files related to the applications you want to uninstall.
  2. Install Google Chrome Beta. You can find this beta version by clicking here.
  3. Update Google Chrome. I selected the menu option Chrome > About Google Chrome, and then I clicked on Update now (with this beta version I've had no problem updating, I hope you either.)
  4. Uninstall Google Chrome Beta. As first step, with AppCleaner.
  5. Install the latest version of Google Chrome. The latest version can be found by clicking here.
And that's all. I hope this solution works for everyone! I remind you that you do all this at your own risk. In my case I didn't lost any data, only the history pages. I recommend you do a backup of your bookmarks and any information that you mind losing.

Operating System: Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.4
